Agnès Grey, une jeune-fille anglaise modeste de 19 ans, tente sa chance comme gouvernante afin d'aider sa famille ruinée après la soudaine infortune de son père qui est pasteur d'un village du nord de l'Angleterre. Chronique réaliste à la première personne à la manière de certaines oeuvres de Jane Austen, Agnes Grey est largement inspiré de l'expérience de gouvernante d'Anne Brontë dans l'Angleterre provinciale de son siècle, tout comme Jane Eyre (octobre 1847) de sa soeur Charlotte.
Publié en décembre 1847 sous le pseudonyme d'Acton Bell, Agnes Grey paraît en France pour la première fois en 1859. Paru la même année que Les Hauts de Hurlevent et Jane Eyre des ses soeurs Emily et Charlotte, Agnès Grey est une chronique réaliste et satirique qui ne manque pas d'humour.
